Water and Wastewater Management
MASAD supports investors and businesses in planning and managing their water and wastewater operations. We analyse water supply, water use and wastewater discharge, then help determine the documentation and administrative steps required for a project or an existing facility.
Water and Wastewater Management for Projects and Businesses
The way a facility uses water and manages wastewater matters both when planning a new project and during day-to-day operations. The source and volume of water, the types of wastewater generated and the discharge route all affect technical decisions and the documentation required.
For new projects, we help identify these issues early so they can be reflected in the design. For operating facilities, we can also assess whether existing documents and permits reflect how the facility currently works.
When Is a Water and Wastewater Assessment Needed?
An assessment may be needed when you plan to build or expand a facility, change a production process or increase output. It is also useful before developing a private water intake, building a wastewater treatment plant, upgrading a pretreatment system or changing the way wastewater is discharged.
We also support facilities whose operations have changed since their permits were issued. In such cases, we start by comparing current operations with the available documentation and identifying matters that require further assessment.
How Can We Help?
Water and Wastewater Balance
We identify sources of water supply, where water is used, and the volume and types of wastewater generated. We review available monitoring data, technical documentation and information about the facility’s processes.
Wastewater Discharge Assessment
We assess how wastewater is collected, pretreated, treated and discharged. Our review covers existing or planned equipment and changes that may affect wastewater volumes or composition.
Documentation and Permits
We help determine which documents and permits are needed in a particular case. Where the proposed activities require a water permit, we identify the information needed to prepare the water law report and permit application.
Review of an Operating Facility
We review existing permits and documentation against the facility’s current operations. We identify discrepancies, missing information and matters that need to be resolved before operations change or new documentation is prepared.
What Information Do We Need to Get Started?
To begin, it is helpful to have a description of the business or planned project, information about water sources, an installation diagram, and data on water consumption and wastewater volumes. For an operating facility, existing permits, previous reports and available wastewater test results are also useful.
The materials required depend on the purpose of the assessment. Once we have reviewed your case, we will identify which information is sufficient to start and what needs to be supplemented.
How Do We Work Together?
We begin by learning about your project and the purpose of the assessment. We then review the available documentation and identify the information needed to assess water and wastewater management. On that basis, we propose a scope of work suited to the specific project or facility.
Once the scope has been agreed, we prepare the assessment or documentation and support you in clarifying matters relating to the materials we have produced. If the project is linked to other environmental procedures, we take those connections into account when planning the work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every business that generates wastewater need a water permit?
This cannot be determined solely from the fact that a facility generates wastewater. The type of wastewater, how and where it is discharged, and the nature of the business all matter. We first establish the actual operating conditions and then assess the requirements that apply to the specific case.
Can you help if the facility already has permits?
Yes. We can compare the scope of existing permits with the facility’s current operations. This is particularly useful after a change in technology, an installation upgrade or an increase in the scale of operations.
Does a water and wastewater assessment replace a water law report?
No. The assessment helps establish how water is used and wastewater is managed, and defines the scope of any further work. A water law report is a separate document prepared to support a water permit application when such a permit is required.
Need Support with Water and Wastewater Management?
If you are planning a project, changing how your facility operates or reviewing your existing documentation, we can help define the right scope of assessment. Tell us where your water comes from, how it is used and how wastewater is discharged.
At the start of our work together, we will review the available materials and your project goals. We will then propose the scope of work, the information needed and an approach to preparing the documentation.
